This fun little tale delivers well on its promise of being a messy story about colors and counting. Dog is a solid white pup with just one black dot on his left ear, but as he progresses throughout his day, he collects more and more colorful spots as he passes clumsily through town as only a little dog can.
Emma Dodd fits a good amount of learning tools into this short book: colors and counting, of course, but also facts about life (i.e. that bees collect pollen and that dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate), a collection of descriptive nouns, and a full series of onomatopoeia. With each reading, parents of teachers can focus in on each of these particular aspects, making a good fit for many different kindergarten lesson topics.
The artwork in this book is bold and colorful, outlined with thick, black lines and filled in with mostly the non-shaded colors described in the book (though tan is never mentioned). Considering the topics covered and artwork used, Dog’s Colorful Day would appeal to most children up to age six.
